Leaving History

I’ve gotten into the habit of trying to sign and date everything I do to this place, and leave things behind. There is a local flyer/newspaper that comes out almost every day in this area. It contains various things like the weather, local news, lotto numbers, etc. Since it’s basically only one page long and free, I’ve started folding those up and stuffing one into spots where I’ve renovated or fixed something. Silly? Maybe. If the house is around for another 100 years and a wall is removed or insulation is replaced, I think people (or aliens) will get a kick out of it.

I’ve also started dating and signing things I put in. Like the back of this light switch.

Naturally I include this URL on things, even though I’m not sure what the internet will be like in the future (if there is an internet). Right now the plan is to archive the contents of this site at the Internet Archive (archive.org) site when it is time to move on. That site archives tons of stuff and is becoming like a digital museum. I’ll probably also print out everything into some sort of scrap book and drop it off at the local museum.

A little friend suggested I create a “treasure map” leading to some sort of time capsule or “something cool”. I thought it was funny, but she was serious. Who am I to argue with a 7 year old? So I’ll probably do that eventually too.
